JUSTIN Astley slipped to a narrow defeat in his first appearance in the final of the Willie Thorne Snooker Under 16s competition held in Leicester.
The Darwen teenager lost out to England Juniors star Mark Selby who won a tight contest 3-2 at his home club. Selby comfortably took the opening frame following breaks of 37 and 45.
But Astley fought back and made it 1-1 after sinking the black to take the second frame 58-53.
A break of 49 was good enough to put Selby in command again but he then missed the final red in the next frame after a break of 47 to allow Astley back in to level once again. But with the game delicately poised in the decisive fifth frame, a mistake by the Darwener let in Selby and a 31 break up to the pink sealed victory (65-24).
