REGARDING the claim in your report (LET, August 1) that Hyndburn's council houses need £30 million spent on them, I must reply to residents' group chairman Jack Townsend.

The Sands estate, in Rishton, has just received £103,000 as part of a rolling programme to start improvements. And after a lengthy meeting with officers and ward councillors, the tenants had a large input into how the money is to be spent.

Hyndburn Council is now starting to listen to the tenants, as this is the only way forward.

So if the council's vote tonight is not in favour of selling off Hyndburn's council houses, all is not lost, there are other options and I feel that Mr Townsend, as chairman of Hyndburn and District Federation of Residents Associations, should look out from his tunnel vision, give the tenants an unbiased view, and not put more financial pressure on every council tax-payer in Hyndburn.
