BURNLEY do not expect a knock-on effect from the BP Amoco merger to help speed up the Peter Shackleton takeover bid.

Backers of Shackleton have oil industry interests and claim a merger of their own is holding up the arrival of their £12 million package.

But the majority of their $750 million assets are believed to be tied up in mining minerals and precious metals such as zinc and copper.

A club spokesman said today: "There is no connection as far as we are aware."

Meanwhile, lawyers acting for Ray Ingleby have examined the tapes of a fans' forum and intend to pursue a defamation action against Clarets director Bernard Rothwell.
