CHILDREN'S playgrounds were being left in a dilapidated condition because a council could not afford to maintain them.
The problem was highlighted in a report to Hyndburn's leisure services committee, who were told there was nowhere near enough cash to improve the standards of play areas in the borough.
Councillors had only £25,000 to spend but were told modernising a single playground could cost up to £40 000.
