LEIGH is alive with things to see and do over the coming months.

As part of the town's regeneration a host of events are planned to make Leigh the place to be.

Aspiring artists can enter an adults' and children's drawing and painting competition with a canal theme.

Organisers intend to highlight how the canal could be developed for everyone's enjoyment and entries will be displayed between 11-4 on Leigh Fun Shopping Day (August 22) at Goodbody's in King Street.

Entries on A3 size paper can be handed in at Goodbody's in King Street, Jacksons (Queen Street), Cooks Shoes (Market Street), Brides of Leigh (Leigh Road), Cannings (Spinning Gate) or Colliers (Railway Road) by August 15.

Entries will be judged and prizes from the Coalfield Challenge Community Partnership awarded on the day.

MORE fun is coming in September with BICC Cables staging a special open day.

Live music, step dancing, morris dancing, a military display, mat bowling (01942 604262), line dancing, clowns, a fun bus, bouncy castle and children's rides will feature on September 5.

An informative guided tour of the cable works begins at 10 am and will continue regularly throughout the day. Assemble at Toff's night club, West Bridgewater Street off St Helens Road.

TOWN Centre Manager John Ayres praised the emergency services for their help in organising the events. He said: "Everyone is grateful for the co-operation received from Wigan MBC highways department, police, fire and ambulance services."
