COUNCILLORS have made a call for a University of East Lancashire to be set up.
They are asking the East Lancashire Partnership of local authorities and associated organisations to include the need for a university in their plan for the future of the area.
Coun Peter Kenyon, Burnley finance chairman, told the policy and resources committee that an area with a population of half a million people should have that form of higher education facility.
He said: "A major element of any strategy for better jobs would be to use our best efforts to try to ensure the establishment of a university in East Lancashire.''
Burnley Council chief executive Roger Ellis said the issue had been discussed by the partnership and was felt to be a serious gap in East Lancsashire.
