THE future of Leigh's only department store is uncertain.
Quality House, a dominant feature of the town's main shopping street, is under review by the Co-operative Retail Society.
Bosses have denied the Co-op store has been earmarked for closure. But a company spokesman stressed he could not guarantee closure would not be an option in the near future.
A decision is likely to be taken nearer May regarding the store's future.
Leigh Town Centre manager John Ayres told The Journal: "I would be most surprised if they were considering pulling out. Only 12 months ago it was was one of the best of their 55 shops in the region and the Co-op were looking to invest £250,000 and add an additional floor."
