SIR - All credit is due to Baines School's top basketballers for their success in reaching Wembley (Citizen, March 18).

For many youngsters, however, basketball may be too static a game to play or watch with lasting pleasure.

A new form of handball is needed that can do more to arouse the enthusiasm and hence mould the character of young people.

That sport is wingball.

It has a goal more like soccer's and is therefore more accessible than the basketball net.

The ball is small, light and compact enough to pass, catch and throw with greater ease and accuracy.

Its greater speed of play would do more to banish boredom from spectators and participants alike.

The greater variety in colour worn by its individual players would make wingball more attractive and more spectacular to watch on video, on television or in person.
