TWO major plans to build multi-storey flats look set to get the go-ahead tonight (April 8) at a meeting of Wyre Borough Council's planning applications sub-committee, despite complaints from residents.

If the plans get the green light, as have been recommended, the Durban Hotel, on North Promenade, Cleveleys, will be transformed into 15 two and three bedroom flats.

But three letters of objection have been sent to the borough council expressing concerns about loss of privacy, daylight and value of surrounding houses, loss of sea views and the flats appearance.

However, Elaine Houghton, who bought the Durban from Melrose Developments Ltd, is confident her plan will be approved. She said: "At the moment it is in a terrible state of disrepair and is one of the last remaining eyesores on the promenade.

"Lots of people have said they think it will improve the area and add to the value of their homes. People are welcome to express their concerns but when they see the development I think they will be pleased."

The second plan is the development of part of the Durban's carpark where plans for two three storey blocks of 17 one and two bedroom flats have been submitted. Similar objections have been received surrounding traffic and privacy - a matter the council has promised to look into.

Vice-chairman of the planning applications sub-committee Kevin Higginson said: "We are aware of residents' objections.

"However, we will carry out a site visit which will enable us to form an opinion.

"The matter is very much in the balance at the moment."
