COUNCIL officials are to clean up the town's cluttered street lights and guard rails - all in the name of safety.
Highways chief Councillor Joe De Asha explained: "Signs advertising car boot sales, computer fairs, businesses, fetes and fairs, etc, are being placed without consent of the council.
"Some have been placed in dangerous locations threatening the safety of pedestrians and road users."
It is a criminal offence to put pictures, letters, signs or other marks on the highway without council consent or a reasonable excuse.
The council has power to remove signs without notification and will do so in the future. In addition those responsible for putting up signs will be liable to prosecution and a fine of up to £2,500.
