PENDLE MP Gordon Prentice was honoured as a "Shining Star" for his work in raising awareness of multiple sclerosis.

The Labour politician, who is secretary of the Parliamentary All Party MS Group and honorary president of the local branch, was guest of honour at a ceremony at Brierfield Community Centre on Saturday to mark the start of MS Awareness Week.

He was presented with a Shining Star badge by local members during the event.

"The local MS Society is doing a tremendous job," he said. "MS can affect people in a thousand different ways and we still have no clear idea why it strikes some people and not others.

"Tragically too often it hits people in the prime of life and we all want to raise money for further research. We are all hoping for a breakthrough."
