I AM not always of the same opinion as Neil Bramwell, but I must back up his views of the Robbie Fowler fiasco (LET, April 8) with his stupid actions he did nothing to enhance the credibility of the game of soccer.

Maybe he was taunted by the crowd - he is not the first to be put into that category; ask one or two of the coloured or foreign players who have had to withstand the racist comments of simple-minded fans, who seem to put the art of abuse before the pleasure of watching the match.

For Paul Barry (Sports Letters, April 13) to suggest that other fans behaving badly, give Fowler or any other player licence to do as they please, while carrying out what after all, is a job of work, drawing more attention to the drugs menace is amazing.

Footballers, unfortunately, must resist the pressure, we all know exists. I don't remember Finney, Matthews, Lawton and other greats of that era reacting the way Fowler did.

Finally, the fans - most of the people watching the games are well-behaved. There are women and children present. All players are put under scrutiny and must maintain their composure.
