A SPECIALIST rig used to test flying systems on the new Eurofighter Typhoon has won a top accolade.
The Virtual Avionics Rig developed by British Aerospace at Warton has been chosen as one of the products of the Millennium by the Design Council.
The rig replaces expensive computing equipment previously used for testing avionics.
"The rapid evolution of the virtual rig from a concept into a product widely used on the Eurofighter programme has gone far beyond expectations," said Dr Andrew Bradley, Eurofighter Avionics manager.
The Millennium Products initiative was set up by the Government and the Design Council to find the best examples of innovation and technological development from UK firms.
Three East Lancashire firms have already been named under the scheme. MB Aseptic, of Blackburn, has developed a high-tech filling system for the food industry, Perseverance Mills, of Padiham, for its Pertex fabric, and Millbrook Instruments of Blackburn which has developed a chemical microscope.
