CHARITY workers and fun-seeking folk are lining up to make this year's Famous Accrington Carnival light up the town.

A week of dazzling entertainment is planned for the build-up to the biennial town centre procession on Saturday, June 19.

The Lancashire Evening Telegraph is a sponsor of the carnival, which is being run for the sixth time by Accrington Lions.

The carnival queen will lead a town centre procession, including a spectacular array of floats, marching bands, dancers and entertainers such as the Hyndburn Comets majorettes.

The big day will also feature a fun-filled field of excitement at Accrington and Rossendale College, Sandy Lane, Accrington.

The field will play host to an Asian Mela - organised by Mid-Pennine Arts, Hyndburn Borough Council and the Lions - which features Asian music, food and crafts.

Events will include fairground rides, stalls, a shooting gallery and paintball range - and a 200ft bungee-jumpers' crane.

Organisers have roped in a professional bungee team from Oxford to raise funds sky high.

At least 60 people will be allowed to take part as long as they raise sponsorship of £45 or more.

To join in the bungee jump, call Graeme Drummond on 01254 390898.

If you want to take up a place in the procession, contact David Walkden on 01254 236430.

And to set up a stall or attraction on the carnival field, call Albert Jackson on 01254 391811.
