THREE Fylde bookworms have helped to devour this year's best children's literature and have bestowed the title of Lancashire Libraries National Westminster Children's Book of the Year 1999 to Nigel Hinton's Out of the Darkness.

Laura Wilson, from Lytham High School, Karen Palmer, from Millfield County High and Charlotte Woodhouse, of Cardinal Allen RC High, joined nine other Year 9 pupils to wade through 10 titles.

The competition, now in its 12th year, also featured a panel of adult judges who chose a different winner.

The adult panel, which featured County Councillor Dorothy Westell, Graham Crompton from the National Westminster Bank, and governors and teachers from participating schools, awarded the top prize to David Almond's Skellig.

Coun Westell said: "I have been very impressed with the standard of judging by the children this year.

"This is positive proof that children are enthusiastic and discerning readers."
