CARS being offered for sale on the highway run the risk of being towed away police in Burnley have warned.
Sergeant Eric Marshall said: "It is an offence to sell cars from the highway. It is something which is on the increase.
"They can cause a nuisance and road safety problems by reducing the width of the highway."
Most of the vehicles advertised for sale in that way belong to private motorists, but there have been cases where businesses have adopted the same sales tactic.
In Burnley, the problem particularly affects Padiham Road but other main routes such as Manchester Road and Rossendale Road are also involved.
Sgt Marshall said: "We will give the people concerned time to move the vehicle but if they are not removed they run the risk of being towed away and a £100 fee for recovery.
"If they are causing an obstruction they could also get a £20 fixed penalty ticket."
