WITH Rainford Cricket Club's point from their rain abandoned match at Eccleston ensuring their passage into the quarter-final of the Sandhurst Shield all attention shifted to the Jubilee Recreation Ground as the second XI played hosts to Haydock.

The visitors took first knock and soon rattled up 80-1 before Haskayne and Ford put the brakes on with some quality seam bowling.

Frodsham also bowled well, keeping things tight at one end but it was to Ford's credit that he soldiered on in unfavourable conditions to claim a well deserved 4-34 as the visitors eventually did well to reach 160.

The rain delayed Rainford's reply and with a revised total of 87 required in 24 overs skipper Pickavance had no choice but to roll out the big guns in the shape of Maddison and Williams.

Maddison played some great shots early on but Williams, struggled against the accurate attack. Wickets fell at regular intervals and as the game progressed only one man stood between success and failure, and that man was Chris Welding. Welding hammered a high class 46 to take Rainford to the brink of victory but one big shot too many left the last pair, Fogarty and Frodsham at the crease to guide Rainford home.

Match ball sponsor was Rainford Printing.
