THE St Helens Combination's D H Griffiths Cup final saw the Anchor overcome St Helens Star Premier Division rivals the Rifle. The Anchor opened the scoring when Andy North drove in a great volley and only two minutes later Robbie Stroud had an easy tap in from a Martin Hynes pass.

To rub salt into the wound, Gary Ball nodded in number three four minutes later.

After the restart, however, Rifle showed they still had fire under their belts and The Anchor defence gave away a penalty. But this was missed, but Rifle still came again and Ian Chisnall reduced the arrears five minutes later.

Gradually, though The Anchor, playing some superb stuff, got on top and after a splendid run Martin Hynes slipped in number four, and just one minute later the same player laid on a neat goal for Andy North.

The Anchor's mid-fielder Robbie Stroud certainly deserved the man of the match vote.

In the final mid week games of the season, Child Reserves outgunned Sidac Social (A Crooks, D Fields, J Greenall) 5-3, and Agrevo's 5-1 demolition job at West Bank was certainly no fluke. Rifle and The Anchor again met on Thursday this time The Anchor completed the double as Gary Ball and Martin Hynes both hit hat-tricks in a 6-0 Anchor win.

Chestnut Lodge and Sidac Social thrashed out a goalless draw and Child Reserves with goals from Peter Moore (2), Dave Underwood, Steve Cunningham, Andy Foster and Peter Baker hammered Carborundum 6-0.

With a 2-0 defeat of Victoria (Rainhill) Brown edge secured the championship of the Sunday League's Division one also on Thursday evening, earning them the Jim Haddock Division One Cup.

At Witton Albion FC ground on Saturday, Division One outfit Chestnut Lodge went down 2-0 to Chester League Premier Division side Tilston FC in the Northern Cup Final RESULTS
