BENEFIT claimants in Blackburn and Darwen are being promised a better service from the council in future.

Computers are being upgraded to ensure that claims are processed more quickly and efficiently.

Preparation work has already started and when the council switches to the new system there will be a period when normal processing of claims will be affected.

However, plans are being made to minimise this disruption and extra support will be available for customers to deal with any problems.

Coun Maureen Bateson, chairman of the council's rights, advice and entitlements committee said: "The new system will enable us to offer the best possible service for all our customers but there will be a short period of time when normal services will be affected.

"We regret any inconvenience but I am sure our customers will appreciate the quality of service we will be able to offer as a result of the improvements."
