YOUNG bookworms from Blackburn have received certificates from the reading club which promises to make books fun for children.

Megan Dawson, Ryan Dullenty, Colette Jukes and Rachel Jackson were the first children to reach their reading targets at the Whizwords Reading Club, which meets at the Ivy Street Community Centre.

Julia Copus, the borough's writer in residence, said: "All members are given reading passports when they join, and certificates are awarded when the passports are full.

"We weren't sure initially how popular this sort of group would be.

"Membership was a bit erratic at first, with different children turning up each week, but what we're left with now is a core group of youngsters who are dedicated Whizwords fans and who seem to get a lot out of coming here."

The group for nine to 12 year olds meets weekly on Wednesday afternoons at Ivy Street Community Centre and is run in conjunction with community worker Ann Cassidy.

Activities include word games, read around plays, interactive adventure stories and reviews of children's favourite books.
