THE Ladies National 25-mile championship was held in Lancashire on Sunday morning on a course between Preston, Rufford and Southport.

Winner of the British title was three-times previous title holder (1995-1997) Yvonne McGregor of Yorkshire with the excellent time for the course of 57mins 30secs. The only East Lancs resident in the 70-strong field was Sue Cheetham of Blackburn and District CTC who clocked 1hr 5mins 17secs - just less than one minute slower than her previous time best.

The ride of the day however, must be credited to Rhiannon Allport, the 17-year-old prodigy from Clayton-le-Woods who rides for the Ribble Valley Cycle Racing Club who returned an outstanding time for a junior rider of 59mins 14secs, confirming her promise showed by her recent 22min 14sec 10-mile time. Both rides were well out of the reach of most male competitors.
