THE Princess Royal's trip to East Lancashire later this month has been extended to include a visit to a pioneering youth project and a seminar at Burnley Football Club.

Princess Anne will now take a look at Youth Works East Lancashire, Burnley, and stop off at Turf Moor before attending the rededication of Blackburn Cathedral's newly refurbished Lantern Tower on June 30.

Youth Works is a project for and working with young people in the Healey Wood and Burnley Wood areas of the town to improve the quality of life in the community.

A charitable organisation, it was created through a partnership of Crime Concern, Groundwork East Lancashire and Marks and Spencer and the Princess is visiting in her capacity as patron of Crime Concern.

She will attend the Burnley Wood Community Play Building, between Parkinson and Dall Streets, to see the youngsters work and will also be speaking at the seminar organised by Crime Concern.

Youth Works project officer Beverley Worthington said: "We are delighted that she is coming along. It is a great boost to the project and for the young people who are involved." Youth Works has secured funding from the National Lottery until 2001 and has several projects on the go, including creating hoardings to brighten up and secure derelict buildings in the area and improving The Delph site in Healey Wood, a disused quarry which is being redeveloped into an outdoor leisure and recreational facility for all ages.

The project has also organised cycle repair workshops to teach youngsters how to look after their bicycles and Bradford and Northern Housing Association has provided youth works with sporting equipment.

Beverley added: "The project is all about building relationships in the community and finding out what the young people want and then targeting those needs."

Former Burnley man Danbert Nobacon, a member of controversial pop band Chumbawamba, visited the project in March.

He said: "There is obviously a real commitment by young people to make a difference and I fully support their efforts."

The Princess Royal last visited Burnley in April 1997 when she looked round rainwear manufacturers Grenfell.
