PROFITS at packaging group RPC have jumped by 18 per cent.

The firm, which owns a major site at Guide, saw sales increase from £240.2million to £269.3million, with pre-tax profits up by 18 per cent to £18.2 million.

Its UK division saw profit margins increase from 11.4 per cent to 11.7 per cent.

The Guide site manufactures plastic containers for customers including Crown Paints and Nestle Rowntree.

The firm today said public fears of millennium problems would probably lead to increased demands for its products in the autumn although this would lead to a drop in sales in the New Year.

RPC has also announced it is purchasing an Italian plastic sheeting business, Montonate, for £9million.

"As market leader in rigid plastic packaging in Europe RPC has good opportunities for growth in a number of sectors," said chairman Lindsay Mackinlay.

"We have made an encouraging start to the new financial year."
