A NELSON and Colne College student was almost lost for words after picking up third prize in the Lancashire Languages for Tourism awards. Gina Smith, along with fellow first round winners Yvonne Calvey and Thomas Broomhead, is studying languages as part of the GNVQ advanced leisure and tourism programme.

In the first round of the contest she won the proficiency award for her skills in French. She was invited to demonstrate further in the next round and produced a tape about tourism in Pendle which included interviews with her college tutor and the French assistant.

"I was amazed to learn that I had won a prize, so many students take part and it is very competitive," said Gina.

"Obviously I am delighted, particularly as I would really like to work abroad once I finish my studies."

Languages section leader Claire McGuire added: "Gina has done tremendously well to get this far and I am delighted that the county rewards the hard work and enthusiasm of students in this way."

Gina won a £100 travel bond which she plans to use towards the cost of a stay in Zante this summer.
