AN event to raise awareness of young suicide has been held in East Lancashire.

The conference, in Nelson, was organised by the Rawtenstall-based national body PAPYRUS - Parents for the Prevention of Young Suicide - and funded by East Lancashire Health Authority.

Juliet Lyons from the Trust for the Study of Adolescence spoke about the alarming increase in deliberate self harm and suicide amongst young people in the UK.

She said: "This is a real problem. Suicide is the most common cause of death after road accidents."

Chairman and founder of PAPYRUS, Jean Kerr, said: "Families and professionals must work together. Both have a contribution to make towards the mental and emotional well-being of a troubled young person."

More than 100 delegates from statutory and voluntary bodies attended to discuss the role of parents and families in preventing young suicide.

Accrington and Rossendale College Drama Group gave a performance portraying the worries and fears of young people in today's society.
