WACKY Pendle popsters The Rubbish will have one ear firmly glued to the radio today as they wait to hear if their music will receive national airplay.

For the five-piece band from Nelson, whose catchy tunes have built them a solid local following, have struck a chord with Radio One DJ Chris Moyles.

Over the past two days the outspoken DJ has joked about the group during his drive time show with his sidekick Comedy Dave. The duo, who have yet to hear their CD, drew attention to both their website and tomorrow night's gig at the Good Night, Nelson.

The band - Bruce Thomas (vocals), Nick Hudson (bass), Chris Hartley (lead guitar), Barney Williams (piano) and Chris precious (drums), - were brought to the DJ's attention after Bruce passed on their CD to Moyles' cousin Darragh Redmond.

Bruce who is sales director for Nelson company Subnet said that after the Tuesday show their website was inundated and they had received an offer of a publishing deal with London company Roundway.

The group then e-mailed the presenter with details of the deal and were once again bowled over when yesterday afternoon Moyles continued to put the group under the national spotlight. Although the band are currently unsigned, pianist Barney Williams is no stranger to the big time after his spell with the former East Lancashire-based Milltown Brothers.

The group hit the charts with a string of singles in the early 90s after being signed to A&M records.

A delighted Bruce said: "You don't get better air play than this, it's been a brilliant week for us.

"We've also sent Chris a copy of our CD which, fingers crossed, we hope he might play today."

The band will also play Bands in the Park at Queens Park, Burnley, followed by an as yet unconfirmed showcase show in London which perhaps may even be visited by their latest celebrity fan.
