I AM writing to thank you for helping us with our recent volunteer recruitment drive by publishing an article entitled "Volunteers needed for 'battered wives' helpline" in your May 20 edition.

We had a good response and the women who rang are being trained on the helpline.

My only concern was your use of the term 'battered wives'.

We tend not to use it as it perpetuates some rather outdated myths about domestic violence.

A lot of domestic violence involves not just physical abuse but emotional and sexual abuse.

The perpetrators of domestic violence can be women's partners (male or female), ex-partners, parents and other family members as well as husbands.

Our helpline is open to all women experiencing domestic violence, regardless of the type of abuse, their marital status or sexuality.

Once again, thank you for your continued support of our project.
