MANY folk will have noticed the disappearance of the stone plaque from the buttress of Darwen Street railway bridge, Blackburn, adjacent to Great Bolton Street, engraved 'L & Y RLY 1884' - a replica of those on the other three corners of the bridge.
It was knocked out about 10 years ago by the derailment of a goods wagon.
Surely, this feature is deserving of repair.
Passing under the bridge from Darwen Street on the left, many will have been intrigued by the relic of a granite memorial peeping out from a crevice in the stone walling.
This was a drinking fountain in memory of George Dewhurst a local radical councillor, 1858, but several generations later the memorial was eradicated.
Perhaps now, in the interest of local heritage, the defacement should be removed to reveal the engraved dedication enclosed within.
