HUNDREDS of loaves have been withdrawn from supermarket shelves after they were deliberately contaminated with sewing needles.
The borough's three Asda stores were among 56 in the North West to withdraw 22 Asda and Farmstores brands.
Two-inch long needles were discovered in loaves supplied by Allied Bakeries in Stockport.
Asda bosses stressed that no needles had been found in any bread at Bury stores and the move was purely a safety precaution.
A spokesman said: "We believe the needles were put in after baking. A full investigation is being carried out in conjunction with the police.
"Customers who have bought any Asda or Farmstores wrapped bread can return it to the customer service desk of any store and get a full refund."
