IN response to the letters objecting to the fair being held on The Rock car park, the following needs to be understood:

The fair cannot be sited at Bury Ground in future, since Bury Ground is being developed for employment purposes. The council has, of course, considered all the possible alternative locations which are at present available.

The only trees to be removed are those which were in the planter at the entrance to The Rock car park. I believe there were four trees, all of quickly growing species (eg: birch).

Whichever site is selected will have disadvantages and objections will be raised. So the argument now is between those who do wish to maintain our centuries-old tradition by continuing to have a pleasure fair in Bury and those who do not.

After the fair has been held in September, then those who are principally affected by it - including, of course, the traders on The Rock - will have every opportunity to collate their experiences and present them to the council, so that the lessons can be learned.

COUNCILLOR DEREK BODEN,

leader of the council.
