A 150 year wait is nearly over for Golborne churchgoers.

When the Parish Church was built in 1849 a north aisle section originally planned was left out.

But parishioners always envisaged they'd get their extension and that dream has come true albeit a century and a half late!

A series of fund-raising events is continuing to compliment donations from Wigan Community Chest and central church funds which will go towards the £150,000 extension.

The two storey addition currently under construction will be put in to immediate community use after completion.

Rector of Golborne the Rev Richard Plant, pictured on site with other workers, said: "This piece of land has always been set aside with the intention that one day the building would be completed.

"We're all happy that this is now coming to fruition.

"The whole community will benefit by having a meeting place for everyone which will hopefully serve Golborne at least for the next 150 years."

The intention is that the new community rooms will be opened and dedicated by the Bishop of Warrington on the church's 150th anniversary on October 31. 267/178/14
