CITIZEN readers have almost solved the mystery of a statue missing for more than ten years.

We revealed last week how the Supporters Of Ashton Gardens were eager to track down the former fountain figurehead for a new rose garden they were planning in the St Annes park.

And two people have put forward information after reading the article.

SOAG member Councillor Barbara Pagett said: "We first had a phone call from a man who worked for the council's parks department until he retired ten years ago.

"Apparently, around this time a dog drowned after falling in the fountain pool and not being able to get out because the sides were too steep.

"This was the reason why the fountain was removed and at least we have solved that mystery."

The statue itself - a nymph - still has to be found but there could be a lead. A man approached members of SOAG claiming he had access to the Town Hall vaults and was sure he had seen it there.

"It would be wonderful if it turned up," said Coun Pagett, who has been assured by a Town Hall official that he would look into it as soon as possible.
