SHARES in Northern Leisure, which owns Genesis in Burnley, jumped on the stock market amid talk that it was in preliminary talks over a £450 million merger.

The move would bring together Northern's 72 discos and Luminar's 24 nightclubs and 33 Chicago Rock Cafes, creating the UK's biggest nightclubs venture, outstripping rivals Rank and First Leisure.

Shares in Luminar were ahead 25p to 952p in early trading, while Northern Leisure rose 7.5p to 192p.

Both Northern, valued at around £250 million, and Luminar, worth around £200 million, have seen shares rise sharply in the past year after reporting a surge in profits.
