LEIGH EAST weathered a desperate late fightback to beat Heworth 32-26.

It had looked so easy early on with tries for Gary Grainey 2 and Anthony Gredecki and three John Gunning goals giving them an 18-point lead.

The York side battled back, but East again forged clear with Michael Redford and Alex Partington crossing for tries, Gunning booting two more goals.

As the minutes ticked away East looked bound for another comfortable win.

But Heworth inched back to a nailbiting finale.

Half-backs Phil and John, the latter named MoM, bossed the show, sub Gary Pendlebury has lost none of his flair, Grainey and Blinkhorn worked hard.

And youngsters Daniel Kilshaw at hooker plus Tooze, Taylor and Warhurst underlined the club's great potential.

On Saturday East travel to Featherstone Lions while the 2nd play Latchford Albion at Grasmere Street.

East U9s beat Pilkington Recs 48-20 with fine performances from Ben Hanson (TT), Matthew Rozman (MoM) and Danny Yarwood.

LEIGH Royal Oak beat Blackpool Scorpions 38-8 in Division Four of the NorthWest Counties League.

A well-disciplined side romped away with tries from P Wilcock 3, P Mullaney 2, P Braterski and A Peachey plus five goals from C Buxton.
