THE public is still in the dark over public transport plans for the Christmas and Millennium celebrations.

Now Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority, chaired by Atherton Councillor Joe Clarke, is to push operators for their services, so revellers are able to make plans.

Cllr Clarke said: "We know that a great deal of planning is going into events for the Millennium by local authorities, the police and health service providers.

"We have assembled detailed information on the events which are taking place and have asked the public transport operators to provide the best level of services that they can.

"We are concerned that at present the position is still confused. While some operators have made it clear they intend to operate on Christmas and New Year's Eve, others have still not clarified their plans.

"We are continuing discussions with Government and operatives to try and see if an improved level of service can be provided.

"As soon as final details emerge we will make sure the public have full information and are able to make their plans accordingly."
