LANCASHIRE is looking forward to a bug-free Millennium after receiving the coveted blue light from Action 2000.

The government body has monitored the progress of public bodies in tackling the Year 2000 problem.

It introduced a traffic light-style marking system. Blue indicates the highest level of compliance.

Lancashire County Council has undertaken a wide range of tests to ensure that its computer systems function normally in the run-up to the millennium.

Computers which take care of functions such as traffic lights and education have been tested in 20th and 21st century environments and passed with flying colours.

Councillor John West said: "The county council has been working hard to ensure that all our systems are free from any Year 2000 problems. We are responsible for providing valuable services to a great number of people across the county."
