LANCASTER City was in mourning this week over the death of their vice chairman Bert Lancaster.

About 300 people attended Mr Lancaster's funeral at Bolton-le-Sands on Monday. He was 56 and had been seriously ill.

Speaking at the club's Sportsman's Dinner Club Chairman Ian Sharp publicly paid an obviously heartfelt tribute on behalf of the club.

Mr Lancaster who lived at Lancaster Road in Carnforth was instrumental in saving the club in 1982 when it was on the verge of folding. He was associated with the club for most of his adult life. A minute's silence was observed before Saturday's home game against Gateshead.

Mr Lancaster leaves a wife, Sandra, and three children, Steven, Martin and Helen.
