FESTIVE funding will help light up Journal-land at Christmas.

In the latest round of applications for Wigan Council Brighter Borough cash, 28 requests got the go-ahead.

The Council's Policy and Resources Committee approved £83,000 spending across the borough.

Money from the initiative will go towards lights and trees in Leigh town centre, Hindley Green, Atherton and Hindley.

And a contribution will be made to Wigan Hospice's "Light for a Life" appeal.

Funding was also approved for new boundary signs around Leigh featuring the sporting, leisure and industrial past of the area, which The Journal backed with £2,000.

Funds were also put aside for future play facilities in Plank Lane and Belmont Avenue in Bickershaw.

Residents in Golborne House, Golborne will also benefit, with money going to improve their garden.

Footpaths in Nel Pan Lane and Milnes Avenue in Leigh will also be resurfaced as part of the initiative.

Anyone with any ideas for schemes that would improve their local environment should contact their ward councillors.
