BLACKBURN farmer Frank Shaw believes his new heifer is the first animal born in the new millennium in East Lancashire after it arrived just minutes into New Year's Day.

Mr Shaw, who owns Billinge Scar Farm in Scar Lane off Preston New Road with his wife Elizabeth, arrived back home at 12.20am after enjoying the millennium firework display on Pendle Hill to find the calf and her mother doing well.

Mrs Shaw said the couple, who have run the dairy farm for more than 19 years, were hoping the animal would arrived on Millennium Day.

She went on: "We have had other animals born on New Year's Day before now but this is extra special.

"We checked on her before we went out and never expected to find them both when we got back. We were really pleased."

The Holstein Fresian calf will join the farm's dairy herd,
