ON behalf of the president and members of the Rotary Club of Bury Irwell Vale, I would like to thank all those residents who again so generously supported our Christmas Float Appeal.

This year we raised more than £3,600 to be used to support the charitable work of the club. During 1999 this included: days out for the elderly and children; our members taking hot lunches to elderly people on Christmas Day; maintaining a garden at Fairfield Hospital; projects in schools, such as helping job-seeking teenagers and organising a local heat for the Rotary "Youth Speaks" competition; donating medical equipment to the local Macmillan Nurses; and providing Emergency Boxes, sent worldwide to disaster areas. With other Rotary clubs we have collected shoe boxes full of gifts for needy children in countries such as Romania.

Once more Santa found time in his busy schedule to ride on our sleigh and the excited faces of the children who saw him, coupled with the money raised for charity, made all our efforts so worthwhile.
