RIBBLE Valley MP Nigel Evans has welcomed the new Millennium - by rubbishing the work of the government in the past year.

The Tory MP blasted the Labour government for wasting the year with "lies and broken promises."

He said: "It is a shame we have a government which says one thing and does another and is hell-bent on imposing even more regulation, red tape and taxes on the British person.

"We were promised an Independent Appointments Commission to the House of Lords but we will be greeted with a considerable number of new labour appointments filling the red benches with Tony's Cronies.

"It is sad that Tony's Christmas present to the people of Ribble Valley was that of taxes by stealth, waiting lists for waiting lists, wrapped together with a transport policy that has given us the highest petrol prices in Europe - policies that cut the throat of the ordinary British person."
