PRESTON may be chilly, but it hasn't been cold enough for local man Geoff Holroyd.

Geoff has been praying for snow for the past few months because he and his team of sled-racing dogs prepare to take part in the showpiece event in the sled dog calendar.

Although research biologist Geoff and his team of dogs are rated among the best in the country, they've yet to race on real snow.

Up until now, they've had to race using a specially adapted sleigh, complete with wheels.

But that is all set to change later this month as Geoff takes his team of dogs to Aviemore, in Scotland, for the BETA Sled Dog Rally 2000.

Not only does the event provide Geoff with the chance to shine among some of the world's best 'mushers' the event provides him with an opportunity to do something he has always dreamed of - racing on snow.

But while the word sleigh may conjure up images of Santa Claus and his red-nosed reindeers, the hi-tec sport of sled dog racing is snow joke!

It's a sport which involves plenty of preparation, which explains the five-mile walks Geoff everyday over the holiday period while many were relaxing at home.

Geoff said: "I've never raced on snow before and there is a chance I will get to do that this time, which makes the whole thing more exciting."

According to organisers the adrenaline-packed sport makes for a fantastic spectacle, and the dogs reach speeds of 20mph through a five-mile course.

Geoff, who took up the sport after deciding he wanted to do more than just show off his pets at exhibitions, will be up against the world's best mushers, including many from Scandinavia, who never have a problem finding snow.

He added: "I'm a bit apprehensive but when I get there I will be ready for it, the dogs will be raring to go and people are all around. It will be fast."
