ONE of South Ribble's most-loved councillors celebrated being awarded an MBE in a hospital bed!

George Woods, who was a South Ribble councillor until 1995, saw in the New Year in Chorley and South Ribble District Hospital, suffering from a hernia.

He is one of five local people awarded MBEs by the Queen.

His is in recognition of his work in the community. Over the years, George has worked relentless for the South Ribble community and was one of the longest-serving Conservative councillors in the borough before being ousted from his Bamber Bridge Central seat in the 1995 elections.

He was also a JP until he was 72, and still works hard for local charities. His wife, Dorothy, said: "I am extremely proud and we were both delighted. It was a shame he had to be in hospital when the announcement was made, but he came home yesterday (Wednesday) so he will get a lot of attention."

Preston businessman Robert Gorick, who set up Liquid Plastic of Miller Street, Preston, is another local man to receive an MBE.

The 72-year-old set up the firm in 1963. It is now one of the town's biggest exporters, employing more than 140 people.

He said: "I don't believe I deserve it and, to be honest, it has yet to sink in."

Other honoured Preston folk on the Queen's list include Susan Marion Lazenby, who receives the same honour for service to neo-natal units and charities.

Policeman John Kennerley, from New Longton, receives the award for his work in the fingerprint unit at Lancashire Constabulary, while Lancashire Fire and Rescue payroll and pensioners officer Joan Drinkall receives the honour for her service to the organisation!
