ST GEORGE'S High School pupils spent the last school days of the old millennium reflecting on worth and values.

The school was anxious the fun and festivities should not take over the deeper meaning of Christmas and the New Year.

So, as well as the usual carol services, every class in the school contributed to three millennium "trees" made by art club students recording the achievements of the past, the present and their hopes for the future.

The project was the idea of religious education head Melanie Tizard. She said: "We are keen to help our students prepare for life, and a little thought about what really matters is a vital antidote to all the hype.

"There is a place for fun obviously, but most youngsters do actually care about their world and we want to encourage that."

Pupils will round off the project by planting three real millennium trees, one with green leaves, one with silver and a copper coloured variety to be a living reminder of their reflections.
