Lancaster 1 Barrow 0 WINGERS Paul Crompton and Shane Jessop proved their worth as the City shake-up provided a crucial victory over local rivals Barrow. And all in front of a bumper 826 crowd - many of whom watched from the new South Road terrace for the first time.

It will be interesting to see if City keep the same system at home to Runcorn on Saturday.

"After the last two games, we felt the best way was to create more

attacks from the two wingers to relieve some pressure from the defence," said assistant manager Barrie Stimpson.

So when City played a good passing game and pulled off several feats of last ditch defending it always looked likely the home side would win. It certainly augured well when Chris Ward scored his 14th goal of the season -they have never lost a game yet when Ward has got himself on the scoresheet.

And it was an impressive culmination to this excellent move in the 29th minute that secured that he did. Kevin Barnes' pass put Shane Jessop in acres of space on the right wing. Jessop flighted in a pinpoint cross and Ward placed his header perfectly past the stranded Paul Horridge.

This was shortly after City came close when Ward turned provider when he played a delightful 50 yard cross-field ball to Jessop who found space for his shot past two defenders only to have it gathered by Horridge at the second attempt.

Then the run of play turned predominatly towards Barrow. Nicky Peverell spurned a chance to lob Mark Thornley and Mark Hume had his shot headed off the line by Jimmy Graham.

The charge of Barrow attacks continued in the second half but a combination of superb defending and goalkeeping kept another clean sheet for City. Jimmy Graham and Phil Horner came closest for City in the second half.

Team: Thornley, Sparrow, Graham, Udall, Horner (c), Mayers, Jessop (Haddow 85), Martin, Ward (Kilbane 82), Barnes (Trainor 77), Crompton.
