COUNCILLORS in St Helens have given their backing to more 20 mph speed limits being introduced as part of a road safety drive.
Members of the Highways and Transportation Sub Committee have agreed in principle to introduce more such limits now the Government has agreed that local authorities no longer need to seek its approval.
The 20 mph limit could be applied to roads or sections of a road or to highways across a localised area.
The council will now look again at all requests for traffic calming schemes to see if the addition of a 20 mph limit would be appropriate.
