MERSEYSIDE'S Chief Fire Officer, Malcolm Saunders, and Station Commander, Graham Hatch, welcomed 22 volunteers at the inaugural meeting of the St Helens group of the Friends of the Fire Service.

The main purpose of the group is to help with the formation of links with the community and to provide valuable assistance to the operational personnel of the brigade.

The 22 volunteers will form the first 'flagship' group of the friends. And at the next meeting, their role will be defined and they will start to help the Brigade to reduce deaths and injury from fire in St Helens.

Anyone interested in joining the Friends at St Helens can ring: St Helens Fire Station (01744 755491), or Station Commander (01744 616239), or the freephone Fire Safety Advice Line on 0800 731 5958.
