A WASTE mountain of 40 tonnes of paper and 12 tonnes of cans was collected in three months by a pilot recycling project in Pendle.

Two thousand homes in Earby and Reedley are taking part in the REAP (Recycling and Environmental Action in Pendle) scheme to reduce the amount of household waste dumped in landfill sites.

Home owners are given coloured sacks to collect cans, compost bins to recycle biodegradable waste and there are regular doorstep waste paper collections.

A report to councillors next week says since the project, launched in August has been a great success.

Pendle now recycles 8.5 per cent of rubbish. Taking into account REAP and materials collected from the borough's recycling sites, between July and September last year 392 tonnes of glass, paper, cans, shoes, textiles, books and foil were recycled.
