CLASSY centre Alan Hadcroft has made a surprise return from Australia and wants to win back a spot with Leigh.

A virtual ever-present last season, he has spent three months Down Under where he was looking to continue his career for a short time.

But now he is back at Hilton Park - and Leigh have thrown down the welcome mat.

His return surprised even coach Ian Millward. "We didn't know when he would be coming back to England, but it's good to have him back," he said.

"There is a problem in that we've committed all our money on other players while he has been away and there is nothing left in the pot. We would need some sort of fund-raising scheme to give him what he is looking for.

"But I know he is keen to play for Leigh and we're keen to have him back. With that desire from both parties I'm sure we can find a solution."

LEIGH fans have been publicly praised for their support. A crowd of 4,468 - the club's highest for almost six years - braved driving rain to cheer their team to a 24-16 Boxing Day victory.

And Hilton Park's acting chief executive, Chris Healey, was quick to dish out praise. "They were magnificent," he said. "And I'm sure they played a part in the victory."
