A CONSORTIUM of educational establishments, including Bury College, has been invited to pioneer the University for Industry's (UFI) ambitious "Learndirect Network."

A total of 68 Learndirect development centres are planned for England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The UFI has asked the partners in the Bury, Bolton and Rochdale consortium to press ahead with a "fast track" promotion of the project locally.

Partners in the local consortium, which includes Bury College, have been given an initial £30,000 to launch the project.

Learndirect is intended for the millions of people who have missed out on the computer revolution and it will offer new and flexible ways of learning, using courses on the Internet.

The learning programmes will be in "bite-sized chunks" which people can use at a pace and time to suit themselves.

Access points will be placed in libraries, community centres, sports halls, shopping areas and in other places where there is easy public access.
